Irish is a Goidelic language of the Indo-European language family. It is currently spoken as a first language by a small minority of Irish people, as well as being a second language for a rather larger group in Ireland, where it is the national and first official language of the Republic of Ireland. Irish has around 1.77 million speakers in Irish with another 100,000 speakers in other countries. It has the oldest vernacular literature in Western Europe.
