Afrikaans is a West Germanic language mainly spoken in South Africa and Namibia, with about 6 million native speakers. It was originally referred to as \'Cape Dutch\' because it started as a dialect of 17th century Dutch colonies of modern day South Africa. It adopted words from Malay, Portuguese, the Bantu languages, and the Khoisan languages, and while it is mutually intelligible with spoken Dutch, it does differ mainly in morphology, grammar and spelling.
